Backup Storage Planner

Estimate how much storage a SQL Server backup schedule may require. Adjust the schedule, compressed backup sizes, retention, and headroom—and see exactly how the estimate is built.

Planning inputs

Enter realistic estimates from your own backup history when available.

Allocated database size; excludes backup compression effects.
Compressed full backup size as a percent of database size.
Average compressed differential backup size.
Total compressed log backup bytes per day, not log file size.
Affects file count, not daily backup volume.
Rolling calendar-day window, not chain-aware retention.
Extra capacity for variability; does not include restore staging.

Important planning assumptions

This is a storage sizing estimate—not a backup verification or recovery-readiness assessment. It models backup files created in a rolling retention window, using the highest count across seven possible weekly schedule offsets. It assumes constant database size, average backup ratios, and constant daily log backup volume. Log-backup frequency changes the number of files, not the total log volume entered.

Recovery-chain caution: Retaining only the files created during the last N days may not preserve a restorable backup chain for every point in that period. Real retention policies often need an earlier full backup and associated differential/log backups. Account separately for chain dependencies, multiple replicas, off-site copies, immutable storage, encryption overhead, temporary staging, and growth. Validate actual sizes against SQL Server backup history before making purchasing or recovery commitments.
