NUMERA SENSE / DBA PLANNING TOOLS

Database Growth Forecaster

Project future database size, estimate when storage headroom could run low, and compare growth scenarios. This is a planning model—not a live database measurement.

Planning assumptions

Allocated data + log size if forecasting both.

Total usable capacity for this scope.

The model assumes steady monthly growth, no purging, archiving, compression changes, file shrinkage, or additional storage. Reserve is applied to total usable capacity. Growth is calculated from current allocated size, not used pages.

Capacity forecast

Projected final size—
Growth over horizon—
Usable capacity after reserve—
First headroom threshold crossing—

Enter your assumptions and calculate.

Projected size by month

Monthly forecast table

MonthSize (GB)Remaining (GB)Utilization

Negative remaining capacity indicates the model exceeds available storage. Month 0 is the starting point. A crossing at month 0 means the threshold is already exceeded.

PLANNING NOTE

Forecasts are only as good as the inputs.

Use actual historical growth measurements from SQL Server to choose a reasonable model. Separate data and log forecasts when their behavior differs. Validate file-level storage, autogrowth settings, workload seasonality, retention, and cloud storage limits before making infrastructure decisions.
